There has never been a more important time to connect with people. We use video calls to stay connected to our friends, colleagues and loved ones… some might even say too frequently! Imagine not being able to hear these calls properly. With all the sound coming from a single device in a group call, this a real issue for around one in eight people affected by hearing loss in Germany. In most cases, a hearing aid can make all the difference in keeping us connected. However, only a third of those affected use hearing aids. Find out why that is the case and how audibene helps change people’s lives around the world through better hearing.
Hearing aids? Excuse me what?
If hearing aids can improve your quality of life, why aren’t more people wearing them? There are a variety of reasons for this. Join us, as we follow the hearing care journey of Mila, a 33-year-old teacher, to dispel a few.
“I don’t want them to be visible.”
We have a small museum in the audibene Berlin office, highlighting how far technology has advanced. From the large microphone and amplifier to the tiny devices we offer today, hearing aids have become smaller and less clunky over the years. In the below video, Mila notes that her sport coach didn’t realise she was wearing them.
“Oh, you wear hearing aids? I never noticed!”
A great number of people still holds a lot of prejudices against hearing aids. They are used to old-fashioned, clunky devices that embarrass them in public or their social circle. To this day, hearing aids hold a stigma in our society. However, a lot of things changed. For instance, hearing aids provided by audibene are smaller than a cherry and can barely be seen.
“I just can’t. They are too uncomfortable.”
Many people are not provided with the right devices for their ears. They fall out of place, are too big or simply aren’t fitted correctly. Therefore, many tend to avoid using hearing aids, as soon as they get them. Our customers are priority number one and receive expert help from two sources- our sales consultants and our partner audiologists. This ensures that our customers can continue to wear their hearing aids and benefit from their life-changing features.
“What? I always thought it was this way.”
A lot of people don’t even realize that they are suffering from hearing loss. Rather, they believe that it is a health issue that mostly concerns older people. That is wrong. While it is true that hearing loss is an age-related issue, more and more young people also suffer from it. Since 1990, the cases of hearing impairment have increased by 30% for 12- to 35-year-olds. The main reason for this is loud noises and headphones. As younger people wouldn’t expect to have hearing loss, they simply adapt. Mila used to turn up the TV volume to make it really loud or use subtitles to compensate for her hearing loss. Unfortunately, she couldn’t solve the struggle of hearing her students or friends in the same way! Today, with the help of hearing aids, she is no longer struggling to participate in conversations.
“I am now much more involved in what’s going on around me, and I’m able to enjoy hearing again.”
